Joubert and Kostner snatched gold in 2008 Cup of Russia

Carolina Kostner of Italy and Brian Joubert of France skated away from Russia with gold medal on their hands and a ticket to ISU Grand Prix Final.

Carolina Kostner, placed fourth in recent Skate Canada come back with better performance in this event. She decided to skate to her last year’s Free Program “Dumsky Trio” as she didn’t feel as comfortable with her “Swan Lake” program that she skated earlier this season during Skate Canada.

The decision proved essential when she managed to win the free skate, before went on to grab the gold medal.

Earlier, the competition was lead by Fumie Suguri after the short program, with a score of 58.30 points. However, she did a lot of mistake in the free skating, which cost her the gold medal.

She was edged to the third place after Kostner and the silver medalist, Rachell Flatt of USA.

Joubert had dissappoint the French fans with a lukewarm performance in earlier competition held in Paris, Trophy Eric Bompard where he finished fourth. However, he made a great comeback in Cup of Russia, leading the competition after the short program.

Even though he finished fourth in free skating, his points was still good enough to block other skater to claim the gold medal in this competition. Following Joubert win, Tomas Verner of the Czech Republic and Alban Préaubert of France finished second and third.
